3 Ways Tent Reception Layout Is Unique From Other Venues

Blog

An outdoor wedding reception under a tent is a perfect way to celebrate your summer nuptials. But once you decide that a tent is the right choice, you'll need to figure out the layout that works for your party. While floor planning in tents is similar to that of an indoor venue, it does have some key differences to work with. Here are three of the most important.

1. Your Ability to Spill Out

One big advantage to an outdoor gathering is that you are usually not limited to solely the tent's floor space. Likely, you can spill over to the area outside the tent, giving you more room to work with and more flexibility. If you move the entry and guest book or gift table outside the tent, for instance, you can use the extra space inside to add more tables or expand the dance floor.

2. Utilities and Access

A difficulty that any tent party planner must work with is how to balance layout with practical needs like access to utilities and extra power cords. If all your power and water must come from temporary connections, ensure first that nothing is a safety hazard. For example, you wouldn't want to place the DJ or band stand across the dance floor from the electrical connections.

Likewise, utilities and traffic paths may dictate where you place food tables, bathroom facilities, vendor work areas, or sound systems. You might even consider adjacent access issues like where the indoor restroom is located. By orienting the tent guest areas with the easiest access to facilities, your guests won't get lost and will be more comfortable.

3. The Tent Structure

How will your actual tent choice impact layout? Smaller tents tend to be easiest to work with, as they are usually a basic square or rectangle with no obstacles to work around. However, larger tents or those with optional accessories — like full walls — may take some adjustment.

Look for necessary components like support beams and poles as well as outdoor support cabling to make note of in your arrangement. If you add walls, windows, hanging decor, or doors for an added touch of comfort, you may not be able to use as much of the interior space either.

When you take into consideration the unique features of a tent-based party, you will know what you should look for in tents for rent. Then you'll be able to craft the perfect layout for your big day. Your guests will be safe and relaxed, and you can sit back and enjoy this celebration of your love.
